History of Baccarat
Baccarat, the Italian word, holds the meaning zero in French. Many controversies surround Baccarat regarding its origin. It is an oldest game, which dominates the casino floor around the world. It is believed that the Italian gambler named Felix Falguierein initially invented Baccarat. A deck consisting tarot cards was used to play the game for the first time.
There is a myth regarding Baccarat. The myth is that this game has Etruscan ritual as base, where any virgin threw 9-sided dice. If that dice had 8 or 9, then she wins to become a priestess. If it was 6 or 7, the virgin lady may live, but had no chance to roll the dice again. However, a number below 6 meant that the lady lost her game. Hence, she had to drown herself by walking down the sea.
Later, as Baccarat grew in popularity, it was introduced in France in 1490 AD. The French took pride to play the game and finally took it to casinos. The game had its name Chermin de Fer in France that meant 'railroad'. The game was of nobles, which was illegal in earlier times and was played secretly. A legislation passed later, legalized this game. However, all proceeds and winning amount that came from the game went for raising poor in the society. The game was banned under the rule of Louis Phillipe and Napoleon. However, it soon enjoyed legal status and shot to fame, since many casinos came into existence in France.
By the early 20th century, Nico Zographos led a team called Greek Syndicate. It worked for making its members unsurpassed gamblers. The team managed to make around 5 million dollars, because they were smart in counting cards and good in reading body language.
Baccarat did not receive much recognition in France. It became popular in England and achieved fame, when the gambling partner of Queen Victoria's beloved son got caught in some trouble, while playing the game. As the game grew popular day by day, it entered America. Again, this was in 20th century. Slowly, people were attracted towards the game and this lent it popularity.
After some time, mini-Baccarat came into existence, so people may play the game on casino tables similar to playing Blackjack. Baccarat is much played among casino games. America has accepted it as a popular game. Other than in land-based casinos, this game is famous on the Internet.
Baccarat Rules
Baccarat is one fun casino game available for today’s player. The object of this game is simple: Players bet on either of two hands dealt on the table. Baccarat is an extremely simple game to follow. The rules are very straightforward and once you pick them up, you can easily implement your own personal strategy.
By participating, you are considered the player, and you are able to either wager on a banker as hand or the player as hand, or even a tie between the two. If the hand you bet on wins, you get an even money payoff that’s one to one. You get 5 back and another 5 if you bet on 5 and win. If you come to a tie, you get an 8 to 1 payoff (bet 5 get 5 plus 40). This is, of course, because a tie occurs less than once out of every ten hands, and that makes the game quite a gamble.
Each hand takes an initial two cards. If a hand nears 9, that hand automatically wins, since 9 is the highest value. Tens and other face cards (except the ace) are equivalent to zero. The ace is considered as one, and cards 2 through 9 are worth face value. In this game, a “bust” doesn’t exist as in poker, but here is the tricky part. If you get a two-digit total hand, the initial digit is omitted. For instance, if a 6 and a 7 are drawn, the total count is 13, but the initial digit is dropped, so the count is 3. If the initial two cards achieve a count of 8 or 9 it is called a “natural”, and as such wins automatically (excluding the event of a tie of equal valued “naturals”).
Additional cards are drawn to determine a winner, if the initial hand is a natural. Baccarat rules state that winning banker bets are subject to a house commission. This is obviously because there is more of a chance for a banker to win. What’s interesting, and what you won’t learn from reading any standard baccarat rules is that even after the house commission, there is still an advantage to betting on house. The margin is slim, but it does exist.
